Windsor's AIDS Walk Canada

What are teams?

A team consists of a company, school or an organization's employees, students or members, and their families and friends. Teams range in size from 2 to 25 people or more.

It is Easy to Form an AIDS Walk Team

Forming an AIDS Walk team is simple and you will be surprised to find out how many of your co-workers, family members and friends are already participating. Staff at the AIDS Committee of Windsor (ACW) office will be available to provide assistance in recruiting walkers, materials to keep your walkers motivated, and periodic updates on your team's recruitment efforts.

How to Form a Team

  1. Think about whom you could recruit to walk with you: folks from work, school, clubs, faith organizations, the neighborhood or your family.
  2. Register your team! If you haven't already done so, fill out the online registration form here. We will assign you a team number and you’re on your way!
  3. Promote the Walk with posters or memos. Give each team member a registration card to be completed and returned to the ACW office. Once this is complete, you will be given a pledge form for each registration. More pledge forms will be available as needed.
  4. Get sponsors! Ask your family and/or friends to sponsor your efforts. Ask your sponsors to pre-pay. This will allow you to turn in your money on or before the day of the Walk and be eligible for any walker incentives you may have earned.
  5. Turn in your money at Early Registration (by September 3, 2004 for a Gala ticket incentive)! Team Captains can turn in money for their walkers at the ACW office. If you (or one of your walkers) miss Early Registration, each walker should turn in his/her money and pledge form the morning of the Walk.
  6. Organize for the day of the Walk! Set a time and place to meet at the Walk for a Team photo and to hand in your pledge forms and monies.
  7. Come to the Walk! Have a Team Photo taken. Show your team spirit with a banner, t-shirts, posters...feel proud that YOU are making a difference! Enjoy the Walk Day activities that include free food, fun, and entertainment!

What are a team captain’s responsibilities?

A team captain is the contact person for that particular team. Team captains agree to take responsibility for the "Five R's" that make a successful team and to keep in touch with the AIDS Committee of Windsor (ACW).

  1. Register
Fill out your registration card and return to the ACW for a pledge form. In addition to the ten registration cards in your Team Captain Kit, additional supplies are available at the ACW office. Put your team number on all correspondence, pledge forms and information! Team numbers allow us to track your team's progress and credit all money turned in by your Walkers to your team.
  2. Reach out
Talk about the Walk at your workplace, community group or school. Send memos, emails, and personal notes, announce it at meetings, or make phone calls...whatever works for you!
  3. Recruit
Sign up and register your walkers. You can also recruit team members who are not walking to help collect pledges. Try to get everyone in your company or group to participate in some way (walk, sponsor, raise money, volunteer). Post notices, wear your team T-shirt, use a sign up sheet, put up a table in your cafeteria or building lobby, send a note, simply ask!
  4. Rally
Get your team excited, stay in touch with your team members through emails and phone calls. Get together for lunch once a week, design a banner to carry at the Walk, or volunteer as a team at the Walk Office!
  5. Raise
This is the most important part of the walk. Set a goal for how much you want to raise. Create prize incentives for the team member that raises the most money. AIDS Walk Canada provides, on a national level, an incentive gift at specific levels for money turned in on or before the day of the Walk.
