Who is at Risk?

Anyone who engages in the following behaviours is at risk for contracting HIV:

  • Sexual intercourse
  • Sharing needles for drug or steroid use
  • Received a blood transfusion prior to 1985
  • Has had an STI

How to Prevent it

Since there is no cure for HIV, the emphasis is upon preventing new infections..

There are several ways that you can avoid or reduce the chance of HIV infection:.

  • Abstinence, or avoiding sexual activity.
  • Wearing a latex condom when having sex (see Safer Sex Guidelines)
  • Never sharing needles used for drugs or steroids (see Harm Reduction)
